ASHETU is a hat worn by the Bamileke people of Cameroon. The Bamileke people consider the human head an important site of appreciation because it was believed to house one’s spirit and intellect. As such, it aesthetic and symbol decoration became an integral part of their tribal culture and hats were worn during ceremonies to indicate the wearers social status and occupation. This hat features a woven hemp fibres using a looping technique known as knotless knitting considered one of the oldest textile construction methods. The crocheted burls each contain a small wooden peg to maintain its unique shape it is said to imitate an old traditional hairstyle once worn by ranking officials and still featured on some sculptural works.

ASHETU suspended light is made of metal, and polished deep brass engraved with tribal scarification. The scarification involves the use of both industrial and manual welding techniques and science to embody the tribal scars. This light directly mimics the spiky hat of the Bamileke people. Illumination happens from a glass bulb inside the form.
