LOBI belongs to an ethnic group that originated in what is today Ghana. Starting around 1770, many LOBI people migrated into southern Burkina Faso and later into ivory coast. This dining table was inspired by the lidded pots of the LOBI people. Although the LOBI make many types of ceramics, the spiky ones are a style of pot that indicates that it was used as a sacred vessel. The spike covered surface discourages frequent handing which might disrupt its purpose. Pots like this one are used to contain medicines that protect against misfortune, illness, and witchcraft. They are usually placed in family shrines in small windowless interior tooms.
LOBI dining table was created as a symbol of protection.
