ILE-ORI means house of the head in Yoruba language of Nigeria. Throughout Yoruba land a person venerates his or her inner head a personal spirit that guides an individual’s destiny. The symbol of the inner head is a small conical object, which is in turn secreted in a larger container with a conical lid called the house of the head. The cap is a made from leather and cloth and covered with expensive cowrie ornamentation. The ILE-ORI cap was originally worn by traditional dignitaries, wealthy individuals of high social status.
