A profitable trade in ivory existed in the 17th century and gave the area its name. however, the resulted in a decline in elephant population that ended the ivory trade by the beginning of the 18th century. Other African countries involved in the ivory trade in Africa includes Botswana, south Africa, Namibia, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, DR Congo, Cameroon, Zimbabwe.

The scarification involves the use of both industrial and manual welding techniques and science to embody the tribal scars. The mirror embodies the shape of an elephant tusks or ivory for its form, with glass mirror taking the shape of the ivory form.
